The picture on the Surya Henna box shows the beautiful Manika in the arms of Vishwamitra. In India, Vishwamitra is known as a king who gained great wisdom after many years of penitence and meditation. According to the legend, god Indra felt threatened by Vishwamitra’s spiritual zeal and concentration and decided to tempt him to abandon his spiritual practice. He gave Vishwamitra a series of tests: threatening weather, seductive women and many other ordeals. Vishwamitra never opened his eyes from his meditative state. Then, Indra sent Manika, a beautiful dancer from paradise that came down from heaven.
Not only was Manika beautiful, but she was also wise and spiritually enlightened. Vishwamitra opened his eyes to Manika, but not with the intention schemed by Indra. Rather, the two looked at each other with love, were wed and continued on their spiritual journey together. They had a daughter and built a luxurious and just empire. Vishwamitra’s story is all about strength, resistance and devotion.
The Surya name means Sun – which gives life, energy and strength. The sun has the power to maintain all of life. It represents spirituality to the Indian people, and imparts material strength and spirituality.
